Spot: Santa Clara Aqueduct (also known as Mina de Bordalo Arches), Cruz dos Morouços, 1783 (begining of construction).
The construction of this aqueduct was demanded by the Clare Sisters in order to solve the water supply problem in Santa Clara-a-Nova Monastery. It was designed by Manuel Alves Macomboa, during the Marquis of Pombal Reform. However, the construction was never ended. In the 18th century, the Napoleonic army, commanded by the general Massena, destroyed part of the aqueduct with the purpose of shuting down the city water supply. This ended up being an inglorious effort by the french army, because Coimbra had one more aqueduct - São Sebastião Aqueduct.
